St. Mark Orthodox Church – Rochester Hills, Michigan

St. Mark Orthodox Church is seeking a Choir Director to lead, train, and develop the parish choir in support of prayerful and reverent Orthodox worship.

The Choir Director should be committed to the Holy Orthodox Faith and possess a strong understanding of Orthodox liturgical practice and choral music.

Responsibilities

• Direct the choir for Sunday Divine Liturgy, Wednesday Vespers, Thursday Liturgy, Saturday Vigil, and appointed Lenten and feast-day services.

• Lead a weekly choir rehearsal, with additional rehearsals as needed.

• Select appropriate music in accordance with the liturgical calendar, parish tradition, and the direction of the Rector.

• Prepare the choir musically and cultivate an ensemble sound that is both musical and prayerful.

• Recruit, train, and develop choir members.

• Prepare and annotate service texts and musical materials as needed.

• Work cooperatively with the Rector, choir, Parish Council, and parish community.

Qualifications

• The ideal candidate will have:

• A demonstrated commitment to Orthodox Christian faith and life.

• Strong knowledge of the Divine Liturgies of St. John Chrysostom and St. Basil the Great, Vigil, and the Orthodox liturgical cycle.

• The ability to assemble services correctly, identify the appointed hymns, and lead the eight tones confidently.

• Familiarity with the hymnography and musical tradition of the Orthodox Church in America, particularly the repertoire used at St. Mark.

• Formal musical training or substantial experience directing or singing in choirs.

• A strong singing voice and the ability to teach soprano, alto, tenor, and bass parts.

• Familiarity with music-notation software.

• Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.

Compensation

The Choir Director will receive a monthly salary. Salary range: $20,000-35,000, depending on experience and availability. The position includes one personal day per month, with additional scheduling arrangements at the discretion of the Rector. The Director is responsible for arranging a qualified substitute when absent.

The Choir Director will receive the support and guidance of the Rector and Parish Council.
